Converting QuickTime Files for iMovie '09

Image representing Apple as depicted in CrunchBaseImage via CrunchBase

Is anyone else frustrated with QuickTime (.mov) files that won't import into iMovie '09? Here's the scoop. iMovie ‘09 does not support the Codec: Sorenson Video 3, MPEG Layer 3 which is how many .mov files have been compressed. The codecs it does support are H.264, MPEG Layer 4 and MPEG Layer 2. They have no plans to add the Sorenson compression.

Here is a free work-around that processes the .mov files through iTunes to compress it as an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV file that will import into iMovie '09.

Note: If you are running QuickTime Pro you can "save as" instead of running the video through iTunes.

Discovery Education's U.S. Geography App for iPod Touch and iPhone

Coming to an iPhone or iPod near you on Jun 17th!!

(OK - I have to confess that I DON'T have an iPhone or iPod Touch . . . yet) Still, I'm really excited about the upcoming launch of Discovery Education's Geography App.

Play the games, watch the videos, take the challenges, compete against friends and with people worldwide, become an expert in U.S. Geography, and HAVE FUN.

Fifth grade American students can explore the U.S. from multimedia content hand picked by Discovery Education experts and directly aligned to national curriculum standards. This geography app is the perfect way to become an expert in U.S. geography while being entertained for hours on end.

Although the app is intended for students studying U.S. Geography in the classroom, the app is enjoyable for people of all ages. If you've always been curious about geography and are looking for a new way to experience America, this app is for you!

Also, access dozens of Discovery News stories, updated frequently and addressing topics like the Earth, archeology and dinosaurs. The stories are often published to coincide with current events -- a great way to stay up to date on the world around you.

*The Discovery Education U.S. Geography app is a paid standalone app, $4.99, and not an extension of our subscription services.

Gulf Oil Spill - Lesson Ideas

While I realize that many of you reading this are already on your summer break, the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico will still be front-page news in August-September.

The first resource is the archive of Philippe Cousteau's webinar, "Spotlight on the Gulf," sponsored by Discovery Education.

You can now download the archive by clicking here.

Also, download the extension activities that accompany the webinar.

Discovery Education streaming users also have some great resources. Here is a quick list.

UPDATED - 6/24/2010

Discovery Education streaming just added Disaster in the Gulf: A Race Against Time.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at the engineering efforts to stop the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history. The program follows an elite team of chemists and engineers from the federal government and private companies as they attempt to plug the leak inside the oil rig 5,000 feet below the water's surface. On the Louisiana coast, biologists and environmentalists struggle to keep the oil from damaging the area's fragile ecosystems. NOTE: Please preview this program before showing it to students.

The Smithsonian Institute: Ocean Portal contains great lesson ideas and learning activities.

The New York Times Learning Network extension contains dozens of terrific resources to help students understand the scope of the spill and the potential (or, rather, eventual) environmental, economic, political, and societal impacts.

Some of my favorite resources include:

Gulf Oil Spill Fill-In (I used to refer to similar activities as Cloze Activities)

Oil Spill Crisis Map

Tracking the Oil Spill: Interactive Map (this maps the current location of the oil slick and plumes, where the oil is making landfall, relieve efforts, and ecosystem impacts)
